Chiefs

October 23, 2016 by Adam

Recently, me and Swedish journalist and author Karin Alfredsson did a story for the Swedish magazine Forskning & Framsteg (Science & Progress). The story is about the chief system and tradition in southern Africa. The photos are from Zambia’s eastern province where we met Chief Ndake and from Cazizi village in northern where we met Regulo (chief) Fabiao Omar Lucavanga.

Hulene garbage dump, Mozambique

October 23, 2016 by Adam

Hulene is Maputo’s only landfill. About 1 600 tonnes of garbage is dumped here daily, overflowing the walls of the dump and spreading into the surrounding residential area. This is also the workplace for the less fortunate, who are scavenging around broken glass, toxic flames and empty cans is search for food and materials that could be sold. Hulene is the result of decades of uncontrolled urbanisation. I visited the dump together with Amor, an organisation that actively promotes recycling in Mozambique. Head […]

Kafue revisited

September 25, 2016 by Adam

Last week, I went back to Kafue National Park . It’s the largest national park in Zambia, covering an area of about 22,400 km² (similar in size to Wales or Massachusetts). It is the second largest park in Africa and is home to over 55 different species of animals. We saw lots of elephants and were also lucky to see a mother Leopard with two cubs. We stayed at the brilliant Mukambi Safari Lodge, I highly recommend to stay here if […]

Kolmanskop

April 23, 2016 by Adam

I just came back from a ten day road trip in Namibia. We arrived in Kolmanskop after driving six hours from the main road through the Namib desert. Kolmanskop is an old abandoned diamond town. In 1908 the worker Zacharias Lewala found a diamond while working in this area and showed it to his supervisor, the German railway inspector August Stauch. Realizing the area was rich in diamonds, German miners began settlement, and soon after the German government declared it a prohibited area, […]

Nanjeko Community

March 13, 2016 by Adam

I while ago, I spent three days in the remote Nanjeko Community in Zambias Western Province. The community consists of four small villages and is situated 20 km from the town Senanga and the nearest road. We drove through sandy bush and wetlands to get there. A friend has set up a foundation that will help to develop the community school. The villages are very poor, the people are mostly self-sufficient farmers and struggle to pay the school fee of […]
