The Vila Algarve belonged to the International and State Defence Police (PIDE) during Portuguese colonial rule. It was where political prisoners and others accused of conspiring to harm the regime were taken for interrogation and torture. There are claims that several individuals were executed in the building. The building has changed ownership several times and is currently a residence for the homeless. There is an ongoing debate on what should happen to this extraordinary building, some want to restore it and turn it in to a museum, some want to demolish it.
